Fourth and fifth graders learned about the unusual paintings of artist Giuseppi Arcimboldo. Then they picked a "theme" (fruit, vegetables, flowers, etc.) for their portrait and searched through magazines for photos to use in their collage. Each facial feature would be created by cutouts of different items. The first step was to cut out an oval (using a tracer) for the face using colored construction paper. Then they picked a contrasting color for their background paper (9 x 12). Next they carefully cut out flowers or animals or whatever their theme was from magazines. Piece by piece they glued on eyes, a nose, lips, ears, and other facial features. (This is about a two week lesson).
