Our student teacher, Austin Fabinski, came up with an exciting lesson for relief printing. Third grade students chose a Rainforest animal and drew it in its habitat (home) including leaves, trees, flowers. Students practiced making four different versions, then drew the final scene onto their styrofoam plate using a dull pencil. If the lines weren't etched deeply into the sytrofoam, they went over it pressing a bit harder. Next they added colored marker onto the plate making sure to color it thoroughly. Then they sprayed the paper with water and printed their plate several times until they perfected the technique. This would be an excellent lesson for home - you can use a styrofoam plate or clean styrofoam meat tray, a set of markers, and a damp sponge. Enjoy!

Mr. Fabinski, our student teacher, taught the second graders how to draw frogs for our Rainforest Unit. Students learned how to look at and breakdown frogs into their simple shapes. After watching a video on Rainforest frogs, students talked about color and texture. They learned that texture is what we feel when we touch something and that artist create implied texture into their work. Students did this by using texture plates to create texture for their little colorful friends. Sticking with the idea of color and texture, first graders learned how to draw chameleons. Mr. Fabinski read Chameleon, Chameleon by Joy Cowler. Afterwards, they had a discussion about how chameleons can change color to blend into their environment. This is called Camouflage. As a result of this discussion, students created beautiful chameleons that can be seen in the hallways at Oxbow Elementary!!!! Kindy and first graders enjoyed creating 3D paper hats. Our new student teacher, Mr. Fabinski (Mr. F for short) read The Hat by Jan Brett. The focus of this lesson was being kind to one another no matter what you look like. Next Mr. F reviewed the different types of lines: zig zag, wavy, spiral, etc. Finally, he demonstrated how to create different types of lines using folding and cutting techniques on strips of colorful paper. These were so successful that our second graders wanted to make some too! |
