This week Halloween is foremost on my young student's minds. Time to pull out an excellent book to jump start a lesson on writing and drawing. I read What Faust Saw by Matt Ottley, a delightful tale about aliens coming to earth but no one can see them except the family dog Faust. Students drew their own twist on the story using colorful oil pastels on black construction paper. Then they wrote their story, including the basics of when, who, what, where and why. My parent volunteers and I had a delightful time writing down stories for our first graders as they were dictated to us, sometimes at such a frenetic pace it was hard to keep up! Thankfully, our older students could write and edit their own without help. Below are some first grade examples.

First through third grade students listened to the Legend of Sleeping Bear by Kathy-jo Wargin. This story tells how North and South Manitou Islands were formed - islands that I could see from the shore of my boarding school in 12th grade while I attended the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor. Our students enjoyed the magic of watercolor crayons in blending their sunsets. The following week we cut out black silhouettes and glued them on to complete this beautiful art. |
