Mr. Rehnlund and Ms. Nardell's fifth grade students studied tessellations during math in their classrooms. As a culminating activity, we reviewed what a tessellation is and then students designed a template to create their own. Admittedly, this was a hard lesson even for me since math is NOT my strong suit and I had never taught this lesson before. Eventually, we figured it out together! Week one, I opened the lesson with a PowerPoint on M.C. Escher showing examples of his fascinating tessellations. The most difficult part was creating the template to tessellate across the page. Students experimented with designs, adding eyes, teeth or having a tail become a mouth. Week two I showed another PowerPoint from a math site that helped reinforce the math portion of the lesson and then we finished our tessellations. I even found myself late at night attempting to come up with more interesting rotating tessellations and fun designs. Phew!
