Recently, I was packing up my mother's extensive bear and stuffed animal collection (she is moving to a smaller place with no room for them). I already had some bears obtained from my aunt, so now seemed the perfect time to set up some interesting bear still lifes for my students. I had also written a children's story called The Mystery of the White Rose that had beautiful colored pencil illustrations of bears my aunt Jo had drawn. It was a perfect match! For upper el, I read my story and used my aunt's incredible drawings to point out shading techniques and how to add texture to the bears fur by blending various colors. For kindergarten and lower el students, I read Berlioz the Bear by Jan Brett. I demonstrated how to draw a bear or rabbit using simple shapes. Then we discussed the importance of adding details to enhance the drawings. The children enjoyed the connection to Jan Brett's story, details are important to both a story and to good art! Once we finished at Oxbow, the bears headed over to Brooks for a day there.
