There were several steps to this lesson. I had noticed that many of my students would come in each morning and rush right past without responding to my "Hi, how are you? Neat hat!" greetings. Time for a tune-up on manners and greetings. I read "The Happy Lion" by Louis Fatio about a lion who escapes from a zoo in France and wonders why everyone flees from him when usually they greet him with "Bonjour Happy Lion." Sure enough, after this lesson I was greeted with many more "Morning Mrs. Krupa are we having art today?" and "Bonjour!" Next, students created animals using a step-by-step lesson using basic shapes. First and second graders drew lions. Third graders drew lions, elephants, rhinos or bears. They followed along as I drew each animal, then added their own habitat and details. Finally, they painted it with watercolors. Week two, we began with an engaging game called "The Eyes Have It." Different closeup color photos of animal's eyes were glued to cards. With table teams (or partners for lower el) they guessed what the animal was, then compared their answers to the full photograph of each animal out in the hall. Then we debriefed. Most difficult was the sloth, gorilla and caterpillar. It took 15 minutes but what an excellent way to engage students in problem solving and using observation skills while building teamwork. Upper el students are creating earth day posters based on the theme Save Earth's Animals: Protect Endangered Species. They are conducting research in computer lab, then developing a slogan and poster which will be entered in the annual earth day poster contest. The posters will be used to promote this year's Huron Valley Earth Day Festival on April 27 from noon to 4pm at Carl's Family YMCA.
