It was that time of year again - time to get outside to create art. My upper el Monday art students were in for a treat! Knowing we were going outside they were bursting with excitement and energy. I set up this lesson by showing them examples of the nature art of Andy Goldsworthy, a unique Scottish artist who creates sculptures from leaves, rocks, acorns or twigs. His sculptures are amazing including long snakes of golden leaves through an emerald green forest or intricate beautiful spirals of rainbow colored leaves. Eagerly my students broke into teams arranging their leaves, sticks, acorns, black walnuts, ferns, cattails or pine cones into radial designs, spirals and delightful 3D sculptures out on the edges of the playground. Rarely have I seen them this engaged in a lesson, rushing to nearby trees to gather crimson colored leaves or picking weed fronds to add to their creations. With the eyes of an artist, they would step back to survey their work, then run over to see what another team was doing, full of eager enthusiasm as the artworks slowly evolved and developed into finished sculptures. It was also encouraging to see some create tall structures and even a "Mackinaw Bridge". Awesome!
