We began this lesson on silhouettes with a story called The Cat At Night which has some outstanding silhouettes during a cat's nightly prowl through a farmyard. Next, students painted a warm colored sunset and set it to dry. The following week, we reviewed what a silhouette is and I showed a variety of examples of silhouettes from elephants on the African savanna to spooky Halloween ideas. Students then cut out silhouettes from black construction paper and decided on the best placement on their page for variety, balance and making sure to fill their page. These were so spooky cute I hated to send them home!
